<p>The problem arises when people sit in wrong postures. Most of the time they slouch forward as they look upon the computer screen, type on the keyboard or work out the mouse.</p>
<p><strong>How does the lower back pain occur?</strong></p>
<p>When you round your back while slouching, you exert greater pressure on the ligaments, bones, joints, vertebral discs and muscles of the lower back. A sustained pressure on these components of the spine makes them weak. It also wears out the discs, the shock absorbing cushions of the spinal column, and pushes them out of their place.  A pushed out disc is called herniated, slipped or bulged disc.</p>

<p><strong>Introduction</strong></p>
<p>Cricket is one of the oldest sports known to mankind. With the advent of one day cricket in the mid 1970s and twenty 20 cricket in the early 2000s, its popularity has soared immensely. However, due to the staggering number of international matches being played now-a-days, there is a need to focus on prevention and management of injuries to players.</p>
<p><strong>Epidemiology of lower back pain in cricket</strong></p>
<p>Previous research has reported that lower back injuries occur in up to 60% of cricketers. The reasons attributed have been inadequate pre-season physical and psychological preparation, rapid escalation in training frequency, improper biomechanical aspects of fast bowling, duration of bowling spells and the overall work load in the season. A longitudinal study carried out in South Africa found that bowling (41%) accounted for most of the injuries in cricket. Lower back pain and injuries in fast bowlers Fast bowlers are at particular risk of lower back pain and injuries compared to spin bowlers, batsmen and wicket keepers. Concomitant hyperextension of lumbar spine and rotation of the thoracic spine in fast bowling places a significant amount of stress on the lumbar spine. This causes injuries to the bones, joints, ligaments and muscles in and around the lumbar spine with resultant back pain. Pain is gradual in onset and is characteristically described as the ‘crescendo-type’ of pain, i.e. occurring at the end of day’s play initially, then earlier the next time around and so on. Typically, it is sore when the player bends backwards especially if standing on one leg.</p>
<p><strong>Risk Factors for injury to fast bowlers</strong></p>
<p>Traditionally, fast bowling lower back injuries have been thought to occur due to hereditary factors, lack of proper technique, poor physical conditioning, and lack of pre-season preparation. There are two distinct actions by which pace bowlers deliver a cricket ball, side-on and the front on. These are defined in terms of the attitude of the feet, the non bowling arm, the shoulders, upper torso and the follow through. A third kind of action involves some features of either of these actions. The biggest disadvantage of mixed action is that it involves greater rotation of the shoulders to realign with the rest of the body.</p>
<p><strong>Treatment</strong></p>
<p>In most cases, complete rest from the sport is the treatment of choice. During this time, a progressive rehabilitation program to strengthen the structures supporting the lower back should be undertaken. Improving trunk core stability and flexibility is also undertaken. Use of a brace while bowling to support the back is also quite helpful. Surgical intervention is rarely required. Subtle modifications to the bowler’s actions can be undertaken to reduce the stresses on the vertebrae.</p>
<p><strong>Summary</strong></p>
<p>The mechanisms underlying lower back pain need to be investigated further. Designing preventive interventions and proper management of fast bowlers from the early years may go a long way in allowing them in pursuing ‘pain free’ careers.</p>

				<p>80% of all Americans will have very severe lower back pain requiring medical attention. Unbelievably so, most don&#8217;t have any idea how to prevent such an occurrence. Even worse, when it starts, like a tiny heart attack, they don&#8217;t know what to do about it.</p>
<p>Lower back pain for most general practice medical doctors is a thorn in their side. Giving out pain killers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories is the majority of the average medical doctor&#8217;s education on the subject. The millions of dollars spent each year on over-the-counter and prescription drugs for this problem would literally kill a cow. While important to get rid of pain, pain control can not be the first and only line of defense against this terrible problem which plagues America.</p>
<p>Spinal specialists are taught how and why lower back pain exists and how and why it needs to be controlled. The vertebra themselves, in our spine, are present to protect our sensitive nervous system. When the spine becomes compromised by years of neglect and lack of maintenance, the sensitive nervous become impinged leading to lower back pain and usually sciatica (pain down the backs of the legs toward the feet). When this begins, most pain will be present for several days or weeks and then go away. Many mistakenly believe their problem is cured.</p>
<p>Far from cured, the average person returns to their normal lifestyle of inactivity, poor eating habits and lack of spinal hygiene. This leads to a degeneration and deterioration and worsening of the problem which then leads to another episode of the back pain. Over the years, the episodes become closer together and worse in intensity until the unthinkable happens &#8211; some surgeon somewhere says the word: surgery.</p>
<p>Minor injuries, including slips and falls, sports injuries, car accidents, etc, are the precipitating events which lead to lower back pain in the first place. Because the majority of these little incidents are not taken care of, they fester until they lead to a problem which rises to the top of the priority list.</p>
<p>The minor injuries which occur through life leave small problems in the spine which is miniature misalignments. Just like a car tire which is out of balance or alignment and wears on one side more than the other, the spine also suffers increases wear and tear on the joints. The body&#8217;s innate wisdom attempts to correct this problem by strengthening the bones and joints with additional calcium deposits which are later diagnosed as bone spurs or arthritis. Once there, these problems are difficult to correct in a short order. While most are eventually correctable, several months may be required to help reverse the damage.</p>
<p>Clearly, a wiser approach is to prevent these types of problems from ever developing. A spinal examination which includes complete palpatory, orthopedic, and neurological testing as well as radiographic evaluation is wise whenever small accidents occur. The dentists in our lives have convinced us all that by cleaning our teeth 2 times per year that we&#8217;re well off. Of course, the truth is, that some may need more or less cleaning, but on average we need to be checked periodically. We too, need to be checked for these small misalignments in our spines from time to time. As wise choice to truly prevent future lower back pain.</p>
