Low back pain is a common healthcare and social problem associated with disability and absence from work. One 2005 medical study of chronic spinal pain stated that the lifetime prevalence of spinal pain has been reported as 54% to 80%, with as many as 60% of patients continuing to have chronic pain five years or longer after the initial episode. The long-term and disabling conditions of chronic and recurrent low-back problems are of major concern, from both costs and morbidity aspects.

Chiropractic care has been shown to compare favorably to medical care with respect to long-term pain and disability outcomes in many cases, but the chiropractor should carefully consider the optimum treatment plan for each patient on an individual basis. For most cases of chronic low-back pain, I recommend a three-step program of spinal adjustments, postural stabilization, and rehabilitative exercise. Combining these three elements can make the difference between a successful care program and a lingering, recurring low back condition.

Most people who have had low back pain have been told to do knee to chest exercises first thing in the morning. Guess what? Knee to chest exercises in the morning are bad for your back. I attended this conference with a room full of physiotherapists and chiropractors, and they were all surprised to hear this, but once Dr. McGill explained himself, they all seemed to be in agreement. When you bring your knees to your chest, your back rounds slightly. In this rounded (or flexed) position, your discs change shape slightly in response to the position of the vertebrae. While you sleep, your back hydrates so that by the time you wake up your discs are filled with liquid. Think about your discs as water balloons.

The history is very important, i.e., when did the pain first appear? Is it something which occurs frequently, or is this the first time? What is the nature of the pain: Sharp, dull, intermittent or constant? Does it “radiate” somewhere or does it remain in one area? What were the activities prior to the pain? Maybe you were moving railroad ties around your garden, or continuously leaning back to paint a ceiling. Maybe you’ve been sleeping on a roll-away bed while guests are visiting and it has a six inch mattress with a metal bar halfway across it. Do you have fever or blood in your urine (kidney stone)? By this process, your doctor tries to “sift out” the exact nature and specific history of your back pain.

Causes

Three categories of lower back pain

Your lower back pain will fall into one of three categories, which your doctor bases on your description of the pain.

1. Axial lower back pain – mechanical or simple back pain

2. Radicular lower back pain – sciatica

3. Lower back pain with referred pain

The second step is to look at the back. Starting with the skin, is there an isolated rash that might be shingles? Is there an infected cyst or an area of skin infection, such as one surrounding a tick bite? Now look at the posture. Is the back too straight, as from muscle spasm? Does it curve to the left or right (scoliosis), and is this a permanent finding or is it due to muscle spasm? Does the back curve too far toward the front (lordosis), maybe due to a prominent “pot belly?” As part of this process your doctor might make other observations. Do walking and standing make the pain worse, and is it primarily movement of one leg that seems to cause the problem? When one sits in a chair, does he slouch with poor posture, or sit too straight from muscle spasm?

Degenerative disc problems are similar to rupture problems, but without a rupture occurring. Instead, the discs of the spinal system have been eroded, usually by time. This condition is not particularly well understood, as all individuals experience the degeneration of their discs in their lives. Some feel chronic pain, while others do not. Therapies and/or surgery are again the most effective ways to treat this type of pain, so far.

Treatments

Back pain is definitely not an easy problem to deal with and to some it can seem like an impossible task to get rid of it. In this article I’ll be going through some of the things you can do to help your back pain without having to take medication that may potentially cause side effects. I’ve also avoided including surgery in this list as that can be even more daunting than taking pills for most people.

· The easiest way to start trying to get rid of pain is to avoid doing things that could harm your back furniture. For example, if you spend all day lifting heavy objects then it’s vital you use the correct method. I’m sure you’ve all seen how t

After your boyfriend broke up with you, it’s normal for you to be crying yourself to sleep or shutting yourself inside your room for the whole day. We understand that. Break ups are a terrible thing to experience and you need all the time to get what you need: healing time and space. But there is another thing you really need, and that is to get your ex boyfriend back.

Girls left by their boyfriends can go through a terrible time. Nothing hurts as much as being left by the person you love. And if the break up happens unexpectedly, the hurt is five times more. And so is the longing to get your ex boyfriend back. Usually, the time right after the break up, is the time when you feel you really need and want to be with your ex but since the two of you are no longer a couple, you need to face the fact that you are on your own now. That you need to let him be-at least for now.

You can still call him, or communicate with him in any means. But you’ve got to remember this: do not do it yet! Wait for the right time for you to call or even text him. You may anger him more if you do it earlier than you should.

The secret to getting your ex back is timing. You have got to time your moves perfectly. It is advisable to save the calls and text messages for later because you run the risk of making grave mistakes if you do it early. Give it at least two weeks.

You need to know that even if it’s your boyfriend who broke up with you, he still needs some time to think and assess things. For sure, he will also feel some pain, and getting a call from a pleading ex girlfriend will not help at all.

Why do you need to give him time? It’s because if you call him right away, there is a chance that you are still hurting with the break up and you may blurt out things that you ought not to say, killing your chances of winning him back.

Leave him alone for at least a couple of weeks. This will give you ample time to get over the pain you’re feeling and prepare for what you are going to do to get your ex boyfriend back. You’ll know when it is the right time to initiate contact. You’ll feel it. The moment you’re done dealing with the pain is the moment you can start working on your plan.

Every year, approximately four million women in America are giving birth, among which two out of every three women are suffering from lower back and pelvic pain.

These symptoms will vanish within three months after the delivery.

Following some simple methods to guard your back during pregnancy can considerably reduce the symptoms and possibly prevent lower back pain on the whole.

Reasons for lower back pain

There are mainly two reasons for back pain during pregnancy.

Growing fetus

First is the growing fetus. With the growth of the fetus, your abdominal wall stretches in order to hold the expanding womb. The additional room required for this needs to come somewhere from your body.

The stretching of abdominal muscles during your pregnancy is far beyond the usual level, so the muscles will lose the ability to do their normal function in maintaining the body posture. Due to these changes, your lower back acquires an unusual amount of burden from the torso.

Hormone relaxin

The second reason for lower back pain is the hormone relaxin. During the pregnancy period, the relaxin hormone exists in your body 10 times more than its usual level.

This hormone relaxes all the joints in your pelvis to provide enough room for your baby to come out from the birth canal. Sometimes, the relaxin hormone leads to abnormal motion in various new joints of your body, thus leading to swelling and pain. There are some simple approaches that can help in minimizing the pain.

• Physical activity level should be decreased. Reduce doing those activities that put stress on your lower back and pelvis. For example, standing on single leg, standing for longer hours and walking long distances.
• Follow right ergonomic postures at your work place. Take frequent breaks, lie down for some time, and alert yourself on structural strength. Create comfortable work environment. Don’t lift anything with larger weights [Ergonomic concerns].
• Try to strengthen your back muscles. You can safely strengthen your back muscles in the pregnancy period until there is no burden from the torso squeezing the pelvis.

Lower back exercises

Here are three easy lower back workouts which will benefit you a lot. Before going to practice these workouts, consult your doctor to know whether they are safe for you or not.

Workout 1: Get on your hands and knees such as you are ready to cleanse the floor. Align your wrists and elbows under the shoulders and knees under the hips.

Slowly inhale and at the time of exhalation, bend your back similar to an annoyed alley cat. During this state, your body acquires a convex C-shape. For few seconds, hold the position and do 10-15 repetitions.

Workout 2: Again, get on your hands and knees. Raise your left arm up straight to the sky so that it is in level with your back. At the same time, raise your right leg as high as you can, but don’t exceed your hip level.

For a few seconds, hold the pose without applying pressure on the lower back. Repeat the same workout with right arm and left leg. Do 10-15 repetitions by alternating the two postures.

Workout 3: Lay down on your back. Keep your knees bent and do mini sit-ups so that you can avoid the pressure on your back. Raise your head and torso up to six inches away from the floor.

Hold the pose for 10 seconds. Do 10-15 repetitions. This workout helps to strengthen your lower back. You should be very careful while doing the workout. Don’t pull up on your head while lifting as it can put strain on your neck.

Workout 4: This workout is same as workout 3. Just add little twist by bringing the right elbow towards the left knee. Repeat it with the left elbow and right knee. This workout strengthens the oblique muscles at the abdomen.

Perform each workout carefully. If you feel discomfort in your abdomen, immediately stop doing it and call your practitioner.
