The muscles of back and shoulder work almost in combination and sympathy with each other. Therefore, the causes and symptoms of pain in both are almost the same.

Here are some causes of the upper back and shoulder pain:

1. Tendonitis

According to dictionary, a tendon is “a cord or band of dense, tough, inelastic, white and fibrous tissue that connects a muscle with the bone”.
Tendonitis or the inflammation of the shoulder joint causes severe pain both in the shoulder as well as in the back.

2. A Torn Rotator Cuff

A rotator cuff is a set of four muscles that controls the rotation of the shoulder. When the rotator cuff is torn or injured it causes severe pain in the shoulder, arm and back. Quite often the doctors prescribe surgery to cure the torn rotator cuff.

3. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is degenerative disease of joints and it usually afflicts middle aged and older people. It is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints which causes severe pain, stiffness and swelling. Osteoarthritis may occur both in the shoulder as well as in the back.

Treatment

Immediate treatment

Pain in the upper back often occurs in the upper Trapezius or the triangle shaped muscle located in the upper back as well as in the shoulder blades.

In most cases it is the trigger points that cause pain in the muscles. A trigger point is tender and sensitive part of the muscle or a connective tissue. When it is compressed, it sends shooting pain throughout the muscle. Trapezius contains several trigger points that cause severe pain in the upper back and shoulder.

Pain in the Trapezius can be substantially relieved if its trigger points are massaged. The patient can either do the massage himself or ask someone else to do it.

Expert advice

Since upper back and shoulder pain can occur due to multiple causes, it is always recommended that the patient should seek medical diagnosis and advice before starting any treatment.

It has been found that most doctors advise surgery for upper and shoulder pain. Patients should always seek second opinion before accepting surgery as the only option. They should go for surgery only after exhausting all the conventional treatments.

Sports like tennis need spontaneous reactions. So, the muscles should be flexible enough the act accordingly, stretch immediately when needed. If muscles are too strained, they become rigid and will make it difficult for swift and easy movement. To make such actions easier, yoga is very effective with its stretch up exercises.
n
nThere exists muscle pulls while playing the game of tennis. Practicing yoga will ease out these muscle pulls, will make them toned and relax them.
n
nWhen the player is geared up for the game, the muscle will contract and be equipped so as to relax while hitting the ball. The muscles will then bounce back to its contract state and are equipped for the next movement. Thus, by holding back the muscles, it will relax and a swift movement in any anticipated moment will be possible.
n
nWhile playing a game of tennis, the person tends to exert a lot by holding back breathe. Thus, some amount of energy gets dissipated. To sustain our glucose level, yoga offers physical movements that help to control our respiratory process and enhance our consistency and resilience.
n
nThe process of performing a movement in yoga is not complex. While performing, breathe out, till our muscles are completely stretched. We should never halt our process of breathing. Then, allow normal respiration. Hold it for half a minute and gradually unwind from the posture. Regular yoga performance will ease the complexity felt and will be an effective cure.
n
nCoiling the backbone is the most effective exercise for recreational activities that involve rotational motions. It will supple the upper arm articulate, backbone and the region between the thigh and our waist.
n
nFor backbone winding, sit on the ground with back straight and stretch the lower limbs out to the front. Then, stoop the left lower limb and keep the left foot onto the right knee. Then, keep the left hand, straight, at the back and stoop the right jostle. On the outside of left upper limb, keep the right hand between the waist and upper limb.
n
nBreathe out and move skull and upper body, towards left, looking over the left upper articulate. Right hand stress will sustain the left lower limb in its position and stress on left hand and upper body will provide the necessary warp. This posture is maintained for half a minute and done again in the reverse direction.
n
nFor a keen tennis sports person, balancing their body in equilibrium and toning their muscles and easing them out, will produce better results. Thus, practicing yoga will help to enhance his or her ability to master the game.
n
n

It is true that the majority of people suffer from lower back pain, but it is also true that the number of people suffering from upper back pain is increasing rapidly.

There are several causes of upper back pain.

1. Stressful life

People sit in the chairs for longer hours due to the increased pressure of work. They can spare less time for rest and relaxation. This leads to higher pressure on the upper back. The muscles and joints located in the upper back are small and delicate. They cannot withstand the long and sustained pressure. Therefore, they become tight and cause pain.

2. Pressure of the head

Our head is the heaviest part of the body and the upper back has to carry its weight all the time. When a person sits to work, he tends to bend his head forward. This, in turn, causes huge pressure on the upper back. It also reduces the supply of blood to the muscles which become weak and tight. They, therefore, get easily tired and cause pain.

3. Dysfunction of the joints

Our spinal cord consists of several small bones. Extra pressure on the joints causes discomfort and prevents them from working smoothly.

4. Pressure upon soft tissues

The soft tissues in the spinal cord play an important role. They hold the vertebrae together and make it flexible. Overuse of this area due to increased amount of work especially on computers tires and stiffens the soft tissues and results in injury and pain.

5. The effect of the lower back on the upper back

When we walk we not only move our legs and arms, we also move our spinal cord, which is spread across both the upper and lower parts of the back. It means that the joints and muscles of both the lower and the upper back work together. Therefore, when the joints and muscles of the lower back get tired they affect the upper back also.

Treatment

It is recommended that when you treat the upper back pain, you must also address the tension and imbalance in the lower back also in order to ensure a complete treatment of the upper back pain.

The best way to treat the back pain is to do some stretching exercises regularly and keep the right posture. You may also take over-the-counter muscle relaxants and pain killers.

You should consult a specialist if the back pain does not respond to conventional methods of treatment.

In the right upper quadrant of the abdomen is situated a small pear-shaped organ directly under the liver called the gall bladder. Its principal function is to collect and concentrate the bile that the body uses to digest fats. The very common problems with the gall bladder and biliary system are inflammation of the gall bladder and bile ducts, muscular spasms or poor contraction of the gall bladder wall, stones forming in the gall bladder or bile ducts and obstruction to the free flow of bile. Gall bladder disease becomes more and more common nowadays. We should realize that the causes for this condition are inappropriate diets and bad eating habits. To confirm our affirmation we can say that only in the United States almost 20 percent of the persons that have passed 40 suffer from gall bladder disease. This disease is common in women, persons that have passed 50, people with weight problems, people with high blood cholesterol levels and people with gastrointestinal disorders.

Gall bladder pain is considered to be the most intense symptom of gall bladder disease. Gall bladder pain has a recidivating character and usually occurs after meals. Gall bladder pain can also intensify with physical effort or sudden moves. Pain attacks can last for a few hours and they are usually triggered by the consumption of foods that are rich in fat. A late meal can cause gall bladder pain during the night and many people with acute forms of gall bladder disease (acute cholecystitis) have problems sleeping due to pain episodes. Gall bladder pain occurs in the upper region of the abdomen, but in the case of a pain attack, it can spread to the mid back and under the right shoulder.

The gall bladder disease have the following symptoms indigestion and nausea after eating especially fatty foods, vomiting attacks and pain in the right upper abdomen, which often radiates to the right shoulder and back. Gallstones are formed by the crystals precipitation out of the bile. These gallstones can stay in the gall bladder and cause no symptoms, but when a stone moves the neck of the gall bladder or the common bile duct may be obstruct giving rise to severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen. Jaundice is caused by the stone in the common bile duct and in this case the skin and the eyes become yellow due to accumulated bile pigment.

Latest medical research shows that the gall bladder pain is not caused only by the blockage with gallstones. Specialists say that the pain symptoms might be for some people the consequence of the intolerance to some foods. Researchers also say that pain attacks can occur as an allergic reaction to foods like eggs, meats with levels of fat, diary products or even citrus fruits. Chocolate, coffee and carbonated soda can cause these pain attacks too. Among the recommended foods that are believed not to be allergenic we have to remember fish, Green vegetables and wheat products.
